TB Testing in Yuma, AZ
Tuberculosis or TB is caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis, more commonly known as bacteria. Specifically, the bacteria that attack the lungs can also affect the kidneys, spine, and even your brain. Tuberculosis is spread airborne from one person to another and it’s not contracted by others or from touching personal surfaces or spaces. Since TB is a respiratory disease, it can be spread from coughing, sneezing, or simply speaking.
Testing for Tuberculosis
There are two conditions of tuberculosis, latent TB and TB disease. Patients with TB disease become sick because the bacteria is currently active and affecting the body. Latent TB is less severe, not as infectious, and is unlikely to be spread to others, unlike TB disease.
Patients can be screened for TB infection with the following tests:
- The tuberculin skin test (TST or PPD): The TB antigens used in a tuberculin skin test are called purified protein derivatives (PPD). A measured amount of PPD is placed under the top layer of skin on your forearm.
What Do My Results Mean?
We will use a variety of diagnostic tools, as well as perform a history and physical examination to ensure your diagnosis. TB testing will have either a positive or negative result, meaning:
- A positive test result means that the person is likely to have been exposed to TB and may have a latent or active TB infection. In the event of a positive screening further diagnostic tools can be used to determine latent or active disease.
- A negative result means the person tested likely does not have a TB infection. However, it does not entirely rule out tuberculosis. It may mean that the person's immune system has not responded to the antigen in the test or it’s simply too early to detect exposure.
TB screening occurs Monday through Wednesday, and Friday only. Results must be interpreted between 48- 72 hrs. Two-step screening available, testing should be conducted at least one week apart.
